The aspartate aminotransferase (AST) test is a blood test that checks for liver damage. Your doctor might order this test to find out if you have liver disease and to monitor your treatment.

SPECIMEN: 2 mL (1 mL min.) serum from 1 SST. Ship refrigerated or frozen. Haemolysed specimens are not acceptable.
STABILITY: Room: 2 hrs; Refrigerated: 72 hrs; Frozen: 1 week
REPORT: Daily
INSTRUCTIONS: No special preparation required
USAGE: This enzyme is found in many organs including the liver. Though nonspecific, it is used to detect and monitor liver disease and other medical conditions. This is a more sensitive test in alcoholic liver disease than SGPT.
