Ferritin

Ferritin is a blood protein that contains iron. A ferritin test helps your doctor understand how much iron your body stores. If a ferritin test reveals that your blood ferritin level is lower than normal, it indicates your body’s iron stores are low and you have iron deficiency. As a result, you could be anemic.

SPECIMEN: 2 mL (1 mL min.) serum from 1 SST. Ship refrigerated or frozen.
STABILITY: Room: 8 hrs; Refrigerated: 48 hours; Frozen: 4 weeks
REPORT: Daily
USAGE: Ferritin levels reflect iron stores in normal individuals. A low serum ferritin level is an indicator of iron depletion. This assay is clinically useful in distinguishing between Iron deficiency anemia (low level) and anemia of chronic disease (normal or high level). It is also useful to assess iron overload conditions like Hemochromatosis. Ferritin is also an acute phase reactant.
