A cortisol test is used to help diagnose disorders of the adrenal gland. These include Cushing’s syndrome, a condition that causes your body to make too much cortisol, and Addison disease, a condition in which your body doesn’t make enough cortisol.
 

SPECIMEN: 2 mL (1 mL min.) serum from 1 SST. Diurnal variation present; take specimen between 7-11 am. Specify time and date on sample container and test request form. Ship refrigerated or frozen.

 

STABILITY: Room: 8 hrs; Refrigerated: 48 hrs; Frozen: 2 weeks

USAGE: Total cortisol concentrations are decreased in Addison’s disease and increased in Cushing’s disease and in other conditions of glucocorticoid excess.
