A cortisol test measures the level of cortisol in your body. Cortisol, known as the stress hormone, is important to several bodily functions. Cortisol testing requires a sample of blood, urine, saliva or a combination, and the test often is repeated. Results outside the normal range might indicate Cushing’s syndrome, Addison’s disease or a tumour.

SPECIMEN: 2 mL (1 mL min.) Serum from 1 SST. Diurnal variation present; take sample between 3-5 pm. Specify time and date on sample container and test request form. Ship refrigerated or frozen.
STABILITY: Room: 8 hrs; Refrigerated: 48 hrs; Frozen: 2 weeks
REPORT: Daily
INSTRUCTIONS: Sample must be drawn between 3-5 pm.
USAGE: Total cortisol concentrations are decreased in Addison’s disease and increased in Cushing’s disease and in other conditions of glucocorticoid excess.
