This test measures the amount of a protein called CA 19-9 (cancer antigen 19-9) in the blood. CA 19-9 is a type of tumor marker. Tumor markers are substances made by cancer cells or by normal cells in response to cancer in the body.
 

SPECIMEN: 2 mL (0.5 mL min.) serum from 1 SST. Ship refrigerated or frozen. Provide brief clinical history.

 

STABILITY: Room: 8 hrs; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: 2 weeks

 

REPORT: Daily

 

PRE-TEST INFORMATION: No preparation required.

 

USAGE: CA 19.9 is useful to monitor the response to treatment and if elevated suggests recurrence in patients with Pancreatic Cancer. Elevated concentrations are not specific. Use in patients with other medical conditions is not advised.
