Bone marrow examination refers to the pathologic analysis of samples of bone marrow obtained by bone marrow biopsy and bone marrow aspiration. Bone marrow examination is used in the diagnosis of a number of conditions, including leukemia, multiple myeloma, lymphoma, anemia, and pancytopenia.

SPECIMEN: 2 mL (1 mL min.) Bone Marrow Aspirate in 1 Lavender Top (EDTA) tube AND 4 Bone Marrow Aspirate Smears AND 4 mL (2 mL min) whole blood in 1 Lavender Top (EDTA) tube AND 2 peripheral blood smears. Air dry & fix all smears in 100% Methanol for 30 minutes.

REPORT: Daily
USAGE: Examination of Bone Marrow is required for further workup of hematological abnormalities observed in peripheral blood, staging for bone marrow involvement by metastatic tumors, assessment of infectious disease processes including fever of unknown origin and in the evaluation of metabolic storage diseases.
