Cortisol levels are maximal in the early morning and minimal in the late evening in humans. Dysregulation in the diurnal cortisol rhythm has been associated with depression and pathological aging.
 

SPECIMEN: 2 mL (1 mL min.) serum from 1 SST. Diurnal variation present; take sample between 3-5 pm. Specify time and date on sample container and test request form. Ship refrigerated or frozen.

 

STABILITY: Room: 8 hrs; Refrigerated: 48 hrs; Frozen: 2 weeks

 

REPORT: Daily

 

PRE-TEST INFORMATION: No preparation required.

 

USAGE: Total cortisol concentrations are decreased in Addison’s disease and increased in Cushing’s disease and in other conditions of glucocorticoid excess.
